Question : Setting up of Tribunals

(a) whether several posts are vacant in tribunals and the infrastructure in these tribunals are not adequate;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) the total annual cost incurred on the said tribunals during each of the last three years and the current year alongwith the number of new tribunals set up during the said period;
(d) whether the Government has reviewed the functioning of the said tribunals and steps have been taken to improve their functioning;
(e) whether the Government proposes to reduce the number of tribunals; and
(f) if so, the details and the reasons thereof?

(a) to (c) The information is being collected and will be laid on the Table of the House.
(d) to (f) Provisions of Part XIV of Chapter VI of the Finance Act, 2017, which provide for Merger of Tribunals and other Authorities and conditions of service of Chairperson, Members, etc. were brought into force w.e.f. 26.05.2017 vide Notification SO 1696(E). After reviewing the functioning of the Tribunals, 15 Tribunals have been merged to reduce them to 7 by amending the respective laws.
