Question : Safety and Punctuality of Trains

(a) whether the Railways proposes to introduce modern signalling like European Train Control System (ETCS) in order to enhance safety and punctuality;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the routes where the new signalling system is under evaluation along with the outcome thereof; and

(d) the total cost that would be involved in the introduction of this new signalling system?

(a) Yes, Madam.

(b) Indian Railways has decided to modernize the Signalling system. After extensive deliberations, 4 works of modernization of signalling system on 640 RKMs for extensive trials of systems like European Train Control System (ETCS) has been included for sanction in the Supplementary Works Programme 2018-19.

(c) It is yet to be implemented on Indian Railways. The New Signalling system is planned to be installed for extensive evaluation on Nagpur - Badnera, Jhansi - Bina, Yerraguntla - Renigunta and Vizianagaram - Palasa sections on Golden Quadrilateral and Diagonal routes.

(d) The total abstract cost of 4 works is ?1609 Crores.
