(a): Yes, Sir. Bogie mounted air brake system has been developed for use on Indian Railways
for passenger coaches.
(b)&(c): Bogie mounted air brake system is technologically superior to the under floor
mounted air brake system as it is more reliable and easier to maintain. Passenger coaches fitted
with bogie mounted air brake system were put on trial in 1995 and after satisfactory results
Railways have decided to adopt this type of brake system since 1999.
At present all ICF design new coaches except end on generation (EOG) type coaches, are
being manufactured by Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and Rail Coach Factory (RCF) are with bogie
mounted air brake system. Also, existing coaches with vacuum brake system are being gradually
converted to bogie mounted air brake system. Conversion of existing vacuum brake coaching stock
to bogie mounted air brake system is expected to be completed by March, 2005, subject to
availability of resources.
(d): The total funds required for this conversion are approximately Rs. 96 crores. In the
current financial year. Rs. 35.8 Crores have been allotted for the work of conversion to bogie
mounted air brake system.
