MINISTER OF STATE OF DEPARTMENT OF PERSONNEL AND TRAINING AND DEPARTMENT OF PENSIONS AND PENSIONERS WELFARE IN THE MINISTRY OF PERSONNEL, PUBLIC GRIEVANCES AND PENSIONS (SMT. VASUNDHARA RAJE)

(a),(b),(c),(d)&(e):A Statement is placed on the Table of the House.

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN THE REPLY TO PARTS (a),(b),(c),(d) AND (e) OF THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 552 FOR ANSWER ON 25TH APRIL 2001

(a):As per information made available by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), 1677 cases were under investigation with CBI as on 28th February, 2001.

(b)and(c):Of the above cases pending investigation with the CBI, four cases are under investigation for more than one decade. The reasons for delay in respect of these four cases as reported by CBI are: stay granted by the High Court on investigation, interlocutory revision petitions filed in the High Court/Supreme Court and non-execution of Letters Rogatory issued by Courts in India for investigation abroad.

(d):During the last three years, two cases, under the Official Secrets Act, were registered by the CBI, one each in 1998 and in 1999.

(e):While it is not feasible to indicate a time frame by which all the 1677 pending cases are likely to be finalised, an Action Plan has been prepared by the CBI to achieve reduction in cases under investigation. All efforts are being made by the CBI to cut down delay and reduce pendency in cases under investigation.
