Question : Carcinogenic Pesticides

(a) whether the Government has conducted any studies to ascertain the link between chemical pesticides and cancer;

(b) if so, the details of the study thereof and the response of the Government thereto;

(c) the details of those chemical pesticides that have proved to be carcinogenic;

(d) whether the Government has placed any restrictions on the use of such carcinogenic pesticides; and

(e) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) & (b): Indian Council of Medical Research under Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has reported that no study has been conducted by Indian Council of Medical Research linking between chemical pesticides and cancer. State Government of Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Tamilnadu, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland and Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir have also reported that no such study have been conducted in the States and UT.

(c) to (e): Central Insecticide Board and Registration Committee has reported that as per International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifications, Arsenic and arsenical compounds, including pesticides Lindane and Pentachlorophenol are the compounds which have been proven to be carcinogenic.

Government of India has already banned the pesticides Lindane, Pentachlorophenol, Copper Acetoarsenite and Sodium Methane Arsenate. Registrations of Calcium Arsenate and Lead Arsenate have been refused registration in India. No Arsenic based pesticides is registered at present for use in the country.
