Question : Preservation of Fishes in Himalayan River

a) whether the Government has taken any steps for protection and propagation of native variety of fishes in Himalayan Rivers;

b) whether there is any impact assessment of pre-dam and post- dam fish-stock on River Teesta and Rangeet where multiple dams have now come up, if so, the details thereof; and

c) whether there is any support mechanism funded by the Government to provide local organizations that are struggling to preserve local varieties of fishes, especially International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red Listed Species Golden Mahseer fishes in River Teesta, if so, the details thereof?

(a) : The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying is implementing a flagship scheme Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) - A scheme to bring about Blue Revolution through sustainable and responsible development of fisheries sector in India with highest ever estimate investment of ?20050 crores in fisheries sector for a period of 5 years with effect from the financial year 2020-21. The scheme provides support for conservation and propagation of native species.

(b) : The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has not made any impact assessment of pre-dam and post- dam fish-stock on River Teesta and Rangeet.
(c): The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has not supported to the local organizations including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for preservation of Red Listed Species Golden Mahseer fishes in River Teesta.
