Question : Promotion of Poultry

(a) whether it is a fact that poultry farms and their management are in crisis;
(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;
(c) the current status ratio of annual quantum of eggs laid and poultry feed change in terms of feed consumption and weight gain in poultry sector;
(d) whether a new poultry species with low input cost has been developed for production of meat and eggs to promote poultry; and
(e) if so, the details thereof and other steps taken by the Government for the promotion of poultry sector?

(a) & (b) No, Madam. There are no reports from States that poultry farms and their management are in crisis.

(c) It is estimated that for production of 83 billion eggs in 2015-16, around 11 million tons of feed is required. Similarly, for production of 3.26 million tons of poultry meat in 2015-16 around 9 million tons of feed is required. During the year 2016-17 the all India estimates of production of poultry meat is 3.5 million tonnes and total egg production is 88.14 billion numbers.

(d) & (e) During last three years (2015-16 to 2017-18), the following low input backyard chicken varieties have been developed by ICAR:
i. Kamrupa, a multi-coloured bird for rural poultry production developed under All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Poultry Breeding at Assam Agriculture University, Khanapara, Guwahati, Assam.
ii. Narmadanidhi, a dual purpose coloured bird for rural poultry farming was developed under AICRP on Poultry Breeding at the Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Science University, Jabalpur, MP.
iii. Jharsim, a multi-coloured bird suitable for rural poultry production was developed under AICRP on Poultry Breeding at Birsa Agricultural University (BAU), Ranchi, Jharkhand.
iv. Himsamridhi, a dual purpose location specific rural chicken variety suitable for rural/backyard poultry farming at hilly region was developed under AICRP on Poultry Breeding at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Visvavidyalaya (CSKHPKV), Palampur, Himachal Pradesh.








In addition to the above, Chabro, Kalinga Brown, Kaveri, Gramapriya, Vanaraja, Giriraja, Girirani, Swarnadhara, Nandanam 9, Gramalakshmi, Gramashree, Krishipriya, Rajasri CARI-Nirbheek, UPCARI and HITCARI varieties are also enlisted among the Low Input Technologies under National Livestock Mission. There are some birds of low-input technology variety also developed by private sector like kuroiler, rainbow rooster, satpuda-desi and shipra.
To promote poultry there are programs under the National Livestock Missionfor strengthening the State Poultry farms in terms of modernization, automation and biosecurity to enable production of stocks of low-input technology chicken. The Productivity Enhancement component provides for supporting BPL families to encourage rearing of backyard poultry. Similarly, under the Entrepreneurship Development & Employment Generation component there is provision for a number of poultry farming and allied activities wherein back-ended capital subsidy is provided to the farmers.
