Question : LAW FACULTY OF AGRA COLLEGE



(a) whether the Bar Council if India has recommended for withdrawal of affiliation to law Faculty, Agra College, Agra on the ground that the law Faculty of the College has no separate Principal;

(b) if so, the number of other colleges under the Uttar Pradesh State Universities Act, which are imparting legal education and have their law Faculties functioning as integral parts of their respective colleges, as in Agra College; and

(c) the steps being taken to regularize the continued functioning of the law Faculty of Agra College, as in case of Law Faculties of other such colleges?

(a) As per the information received from the Bar Council of India, its Legal Education Committee has expressed the view that approval of affiliation to Agra College, Agra be withdrawn because the said College is not an independent Law College and is not having a separate Principal as per the norms laid down by the Bar Council of India Rules. The Rules envisage either a Law College or a Law Department of a University, not a Law Department of a college. The said recommendation of the Legal Education Committee has been approved by the Bar Council of India and communicated to Agra College;

(b) The number of independent Law Colleges is 8 and the number of Department attached multi faculty colleges is 37 as per the information furnished by the Bar Council of India;

(c) The letter dated 20th June, 2000 from Vice Chancellor, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Agra and letter dated 29th July, 2000 from Principal, Agra College, Agra, requesting reconsideration of the above decision of the Bar Council of India, have been included in the Agenda for the next meeting of its Legal Education Committee for consideration.
