Question : Weavers in Tribal Areas

(a) whether the Government has identified the number of weavers in the tribal areas in the country involved in the traditional weaving practices;

(b) if so, the details thereof, State-wise; and

(c) the details of schemes being implemented for the promotion of traditional weaving and the funds allocated for the said purpose during each of the last three years and the current year, State-wise?

(a) & (b): As per Third Handloom Census (2009-10), there are 43,31,876 Handloom and allied workers/weavers across the country. Of this, 6,96,932 workers/weavers belong to Scheduled Tribes. State-wise details is at Annexure-I.

(c): For the promotion of Handloom Weaving (including traditional weaving) of the country, following schemes/programmes are under implementation during 12th Plan –

1. National Handloom Development Programme
2. Handloom Weavers Comprehensive Welfare Scheme
3. Yarn Supply Scheme
4. Comprehensive Handloom Cluster Development Scheme

Statement indicating funds allocated to this Ministry & released to different States (including their Tribal areas) for implementation of above schemes, during the last three years and current year, is annexed at Annexure-II.
