Question : Paucity of Funds MGNREGS

(a) whether due to paucity of funds, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme(MGNREGS) has not been working properly in many States;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the steps being taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) to (c): The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (Mahatma Gandhi NREGS) is a demand driven wage employment guarantee programme. Fund release to the States/UTs is a continuous process and Central Government is committed to making funds available keeping in view the demand for work as per the Scheme guidelines. The Ministry seeks additional fund for Mahatma Gandhi NREGS as and when required for meeting the demand for work on the ground. The financial allocation for the scheme was enhanced from Rs.61, 500 crore at Budget Estimate stage to Rs. 1,11,500 crore at Revised Estimate stage during the financial year 2020-21.

The Government of India has allocated Rs. 73,000 crore at Budget Estimate for current financial year 2021-22 for Mahatma Gandhi NREGS which is an increase of Rs. 11,500 crore as compared to Budget Estimate for the financial year 2020-21.
