Question : Promotion of Domain Name in Indian Languages

Will the Minister of ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY be pleased to state::-

(a) whether the Government proposes to take services of a social media agency to register online in the name of ''dot in'' and ''dot Bharat'' to promote the use of domain-name in Indian languages by small and medium enterprises and if so, the details thereof;
(b) whether the Government proposes to use social media means to spread awareness about ''dot Bharat'' domain in regional languages and if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether the Government has taken any initiative to facilitate writing of communication content and domain name in their regional language for internet-users; and
(d) if so, the details thereof ?

Answer given by the minister

(a): No, Sir. The registrations of .IN (dot IN) and .Bharat (dot Bharat) domains are being done by accredited registrars of .IN registry of National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI). Government of India has designated and appointed NIXI (which is a not for profit organization under section 8 of the companies Act 2013) as the official registry for India’s Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) which has the responsibility for managing India’s ccTLDs .IN and .Bharat domains. At present 137 registrars have been accredited to offer .IN domains and 37 registrars for .Bharat domains name registration worldwide to customers.

(b) Yes Sir. Government of India through .IN registry of NIXI have been undertaking continuous efforts to promote ''dot Bharat'' through various means like Print media, Electronic media, various competitive award schemes, concessional .Bharat schemes and social media.

(c) and (d): Yes, Sir. Government of India has taken initiatives to facilitate writing of communication content in their regional language for internet-users. Various software has been developed for the same covering all 22 official languages of the country.

Domain names in all 22 official Indian languages has been facilitated . The various languages covered are Hindi, Bodo (Boro), Dogri, Konkani, Maithili, Marathi,Nepali, Sindhi-Devanagari, Bengali, Manipuri, Telugu, Gujarati, Urdu, Tamil, Punjabi , Kannada, Oriya, Assamese, Sanskrit, Santali, Kashmiri, Sindhi -Arabic and Malyalam. Domain names are now being registered in all 22 official languages.
