Question : Transportation of Mortal Remains

(a) whether the Government has issued any guidelines for transporting mortal remains of Indians from foreign countries and if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether the Government has agreed to transport bodies at a flat rate against the practice of levying charges on the basis of the weight of the body including the coffin and if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government has agreed to transport bodies of children less than the age of 12 years at a price half of the flat rate and if so, the details thereof; and

(d) whether the Government is willing to transport mortal remains from the middle east for free and if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (c) : No, Sir. However, Air India has issued two circulars dated 02.01.2019 with guidelines on the subject of carriage of Mortal Remains from Gulf/UAE, which include the following:;
;

i. For carriage of mortal remains from Gulf/UAE to India, a fixed sum to be levied, on any direct Air India flight including Air India Express;

ii. In case of mortal remains of children(below 12 years of age), 50 percent discount on the flat charges;

(d): Air India carries human remains free of cost from Gulf countries to India on receipt of request from the concerned Indian Embassy.
