Question : Digitisation of Post Offices

(a) whether the Government is considering to digitally connect rural post offices across the country and enable core banking facilities to 1,20,000 other post offices;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the steps taken/being taken in this regard;

(d) whether the Government is considering to set up over 1,000 ATMs in three months for the convenience of post office savings bank customers; and

(e) if so, the details thereof and the time by which a final decision in this regard is likely to be taken?

(a) to (c) Yes Madam. Government is digitally connecting all 1,29,345 Gramin Dak Sewak (GDS) Post offices in rural areas. The Rural Information and Communication Technology (RICT) segment under the IT Modernization Project of Department of Posts which is under implementation phase, will digitally connect 1,29,345 Gramin Dak Sewak Post Offices in rural areas across the Country by December, 2017. Core Banking Solution (CBS) is being implemented in 25297 Departmental Post Offices of the country. As on 31-01-2017, 23147 Departmental Post Offices have been migrated to CBS platform and 8729 GDS Post offices have been migrated to RICT platform and are being enabled with CBS facilities.

(d) & (e) Yes Madam, As part of the IT Modernization Project the Government has decided to provide ATM facility for POSB customers. As of now 970 ATMs have been installed at major post offices across the country. The Circle wise details of number of ATMs Installed is at Annexure A.
