Question : Milk Processing Capacity

a) the present position of India in respect to world milk production along with the present milk processing capacities in the country;
b) whether the Government has proposed to double the milk processing capacity in the country;
c) if so, the details thereof and the steps taken in this regard;
d) the number of milk dairy co-operatives running at present in Tripura and Maharashtra along with the details of the production of milk during each of the last three years, district-wise;
e) whether the Government has not been able to bring in investment in dairy sector and if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor and the corrective steps taken in this regard; and
f) the other steps taken by the Government to increase milk production and reduce the cost of production so that India could retain its number one ranking in milk production?

(a) India ranks first among the world’s milk producing nations. In 2019, the world milk production was 851.80 million tonnes and in 2018-19, milk production on India was 187.75 million tonnes (22% of world). As on 31.03.2019, Milk Processing capacity in Cooperative sector was 815.49 Lakh Liter per Day (LLPD).

(b) Yes

(c) Towards doubling the milk processing capacities in the country, Department of Animal Husbandry is implementing following schemes:
i. Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF)
ii. Dairy Processing and Infrastructure Development Fund (DIDF)
iii. National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD)

(d) As per information available with this Department, number of Cooperatives in Tripura and Maharashtra are given below:

(e) No Sir, this Department has been able to bring investment and is implementing the following schemes for development of Dairy Sector:
i. Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF)- outlay of Rs. 15000 Crore
i. Dairy Processing and Infrastructure Development Fund (DIDF)- outlay of Rs. 11,184 Crore
ii. National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD)

(f) This Department is implementing the Central Sector Scheme Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) to increase milk production and reduce the cost of production so that India could retain its number one ranking in milk production.
