Question : Research in Defence Organisations

(a) the allocation made in the budget for the research wing in defence organisations like DRDO, LRDE, HAL, NAL, etc.;

(b) the amount sanctioned for various research operations taken up by these organisations, function and year-wise since 2014 and the allocation made for research in defence organisations as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP);

(c) whether the Government proposes to promote research in weapons manufacturing, radar, communication, etc. through the defence research organisations; and

(d) if so, the details thereof and the action taken in this regard so far?

(a) & (b): The allocation details since 2014-15 for Department of Defence Research & Development[DD(R&D)], which includes Laboratories/establishments like Electronics & Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), are enclosed as Appendix.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is a public undertaking for which no separate R&D funding is provided by the Government.
National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) is not a Defence organisation but under the control of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
(c) & (d): Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO), an R&D wing of Ministry of Defence, is primarily involved in design and development of complex and security systems in the fields of missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, radars, electronic warfare systems, sonars combat vehicles, combat aircraft, sensors, etc. for the Armed Forces as per their specific Qualitative Requirements.
The value of Products/Systems/Technologies Developed/Upgraded by DRDO and inducted stands Rs.2.73 Lakh Cr.

DRDO is committed towards developing cutting edge technologies and systems for the Indian Armed Forces through R&D in all technology domains.
