Question : NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT POLICY



(a) whether the Government proposes to formulate a new National Environment Policy;

(b) if so, the salient features of the new policy;

(c) whether the views of the State Governments were taken before arriving at decision on the policy;

(d) if so, the details thereof;

(e) whether the Government propose to protect ecologically fragile States like Goa, Maharashtra, Kerala etc.; and

(f) if so, the details thereof?

(a) No Sir.The Government has already formulated the National Environment Policy in 2006.

(b) to (d) Does not arise.

(e) & (f) The Government has constituted a Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel under the Chairmanship of Prof. Madhav Gadgil to assess the status of ecology, demarcate ecologically sensitive areas and make recommendations for conservation of the western ghats region.

In addition, the development along the coastal stretches in States like Goa, Maharashtra, Kerala etc. are regulated in accordance with the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Notification, 1991 issued under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
