Question : Defence Equipment Supplied to Myanmar

(a) the quantum of defence equipment such as artillery guns, rocket launchers, rifles, radars, motors, night vision devices, naval gun boats supplied to Myanmar by India during the last three years and the current year;

(b) whether Myanmar military chief recently visited India, if so, the details thereof and the purpose of the visit;

(c) the issues discussed during the visit and the number of agreements signed;

(d) whether India and Myanmar have recently finalised a $37.9 million deal for the supply of light weight torpedoes and if so, the details thereof;

(e) the other steps taken by the Government to have close military cooperation with Myanmar as part of the overall plan to expand defence cooperation with ASEAN under the more action oriented Act East Policy; and


(f) whether tasks has been held regarding insurgent groups operating in the region and if so, the details thereof?

(a) & (d): Details cannot be divulged as this may affect bilateral ties between India and Myanmar.

(b) & (c): The Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services of the Republic of Union of Myanmar visited India from 7-15 July, 2017. The visit enhanced friendly and mutually beneficial interaction between Indian and Myanmar Armed Forces, which would serve to further strengthen bilateral relations.

(e) As part of ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus, India and Myanmar are co-chairing the Expert Working Group (EWG) on Military Medicine for the 3rd cycle from 2017-19.

(f) Such issues are discussed during the conduct of biannual Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting between Indian Army & Myanmar Army and Annual National Level Meeting between Government officials of both the countries.
