Question : Job Opportunities in Drought Hit Areas

(a) whether the Government has formulated any comprehensive policy to provide more jobs for drought hit areas under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and if so, the details thereof;

(b) the extent to which this policy is likely to be helpful in providing jobs to the poor in various States including Andhra Pradesh;

(c) the other steps taken or proposed to be taken for provision of more jobs in drought hit areas of the country under MGNREGS, State/UT-wise including Andhra Pradesh; and

(d) the number of poor people benefited through MGNREGS during the last three years and the current year so far, State/ UT-wise including Andhra Pradesh?

Statement in reply to Parts (a)to(d) of Lok Sabha Starred Question No. 132 for 09.03.2017.

(a)to(d): The Ministry of Rural Development provides 50 days of additional employment in notified areas of drought affected States under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) on recommendation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. The number of households who have been benefited from this policy is given at Annexure-I.
Accordingly a provision of additional employment of 50 days over and above 100 days per household under MGNREGA has been made in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh during the Financial Year 2016-17. Details of households provided employment to job card holders in States/UTs including Andhra Pradesh under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) during the last three years and the current year (as on 03.03.2017) is indicated at Annexure-II.
