Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE (SHRI HUKUMDEO NARAYAN YADAV)

(a.) to (d.): No such proposal has been received from Government of Kerala during the current year. Government of India, however, sanctioned a Central Sector Scheme on Technology Mission on Coconut for implementation in all coconut growing States during 2001-2002. During 2002-2003, the scheme is being implemented with an outlay of Rs.20.00 crores. The scheme is implemented by the Coconut Development Board in the form of projects with focus on technology development, demonstrations and adoption in the field of the insect/pest and disease management; processing and product diversification; and market research and promotion. Funds are not released to the State Governments directly. The projects which come under the purview of Technology Mission are considered and approved by Project Approval Committee in the Coconut Development Board on merit. The details of the projects approved/sanctioned by the Board under the scheme is at Annexure.

(e.): Through the programmes of the mission, market potential of coconut products have been enhanced which has helped in improving the prices of coconut. The projects under technology development, demonstration and adoption in the field of insect/pest and disease management will directly help the farmers in increasing productivity of coconuts. The projects under product diversification will increase the uses of coconut and reduce dependence on coconut oil which will accrue higher prices to the farmers for their produce.
