Question : INTER-STATE WATER DISPUTES



(a) whether the Union Government are aware that several State Governments are against Centre’s intervention in water related issues;

(b) if so, the facts thereof;

(c) whether the Union Government propose to issue directions to concerned State Governments to resolve water disputes on their own; and

(d) if so, the reaction of the State Governments thereto?

(a) & (b) Several State Governments have expressed differing views on proposal for constitution of River Basin Organisations with statutory powers for inter-State River Basins, guidelines for water allocation of inter- State rivers amongst States and putting into place a Comprehensive Information System in the recently held meeting of National Water Resources Council.

(c) & (d) The Union Government do endeavour to facilitate and encourage the concerned State Governments to resolve water disputes on their own and a large number of agreements have been reached amongst states in the past on water related issues.
