(a) the total coastal area in the country particularly in the State of Tamil Nadu;

(b) the number of major/minor ports in the State; and

(c) the assistance provided by the Union Government to Tamil Nadu for the development of its vast ocean area during the last three years ?

MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) OF THE MINISTRY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AND MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) OF THE DEPARTMENT OF OCEAN DEVELOPMENT(SHRI KAPIL SIBAL)

(a) Total coastline of the country is 8118 km. and the coastline in the State of Tamil Nadu is 1076 km.

(b) There are 3 major ports, 2 intermediate ports and 11 minor ports in the State of Tamil Nadu.

(c) The assistance provided by the Union Government through the Department of Ocean Development to Tamil Nadu during the last three years includes research activities on
(i) “Coastal Ocean Monitoring and Prediction System”,
(ii) “Integrated Coastal and Marine Area Management”,
(iii) “Development of potential drugs from the Ocean”,
(iv) Ocean Science and Technology Development” and
(v) Societal activities or the betterment of the fishermen community.

The expenditure incurred on these activities on these activities is as follows:
