(a) & (b) Government of India has adopted National Water
Policy â 2002 which interalia provides that water should be
made available to water short areas by transfer from one
river basin to another, based as a national perspective,
after taking in to account the requirements of the
basin/areas.
The Government has formulated a proposal for inter-
linking of rivers in the country. The proposal consists of
two components, namely, Himalayan Rivers Development
Component and Peninsular River Development Component. Apart
from others, the Himalayan Component also includes a proposal
for transferring surplus waters from river Bhrahmaputra in
Assam to river Ganga in West Bengal through a link named
Manas-Sankosh-Teesta-Ganga Link.
