Question : GRANT OF DUAL CITIZENSHIP



(a) whether necessary modalities in regard to grant of dual citizenship have been worked out;

(b) whether the Government have received several representations from Non-Resident Indians for dual citizenship;

(c) if so, the details thereof; and

(d) the time by which a final decision is likely to be taken in this regard?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS (SHRI VINOD KHANNA)

(a) & (d) The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2003 containing inter alia provisions for the registration of persons of Indian origin belonging to eight specified countries as overseas citizens of India, was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on 9 May, 2003.

(b)&(c). Non-Resident Indians have evinced interest in dual citizenship for practical convenience, to take foreign nationality without losing their Indian citizenship, to maintain strong bonds with India and to forge emotional and culture bonds with India by their future generations.
