Question : Census of Water Bodies

(a) the details of total number of Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (AIBP) projects completed during the last three years, State-wise;
(b) the total number of Surface Minor Irrigation (SMI) and Repair, Renovation and Restoration (RRR) of Water Bodies projects completed during the last three years; and
(c) whether the Government has begun the census of water bodies and if so, the details thereof?

(a) After launch of Under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana - Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (PMKSY-AIBP) in 2016, ninety-nine (99) on-going major/ medium irrigation projects were prioritized for assured financial assistance, along with their command area development works.

Out of these, 46 number of projects have been declared as completed by the State Government, and 21 projects have progress more than 90%. Out of the 46 number of competed projects, 15 projects have been completed since June, 2018, as per details given below.

(b) As per provisional figures reported by the States so far, works related to 982 number of projects included for financial assistance under Surface Minor Irrigation (SMI) component, and 582 number of water bodies included under Repair, Renovation and Restoration (RRR) of Water Bodies component of Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana – Har Khet Ko Pani, have been completed during the last three years.

(c) Yes, Sir. This Ministry has, in the year 2018, taken up first census of water bodies under the centrally sponsored scheme “Irrigation Census”. The water bodies census proposes to collect key information on all important aspects pertaining to water bodies of the country, including their size, condition, status of encroachments, use, storage capacity, status of filling up of storage etc.
