Question : Upgradation of Airports

(a) the details of steps being taken for upgradation and maintenance of various airports in Tamil Nadu;
(b) the details of schemes being implemented in Tamil Nadu along with the details of projects, the current status, the year of launch, funds allocated and expected date of completion of these projects;
(c) whether the Government has taken any steps for modernisation of infrastructure of airports in the wake of Covid-19 such as e-passports, contactless payment solutions, thermal screenings etc.; and
(d) if so, the names of the airports where these steps have been implemented including the cost of such projects, airport-wise?

STATEMENT IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) to (d) of LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 136 FOR 10.02.2022 REGARDING "UPGRADATION OF AIRPORTS IN TAMIL NADU".; (a) & (b) : Upgradation/Modernisation of airports is a continuous process and is undertaken by Airports Authority of India(AAI) from time to time depending on the availability of land, commercial viability, socio-economic considerations, traffic demand / willingness of airlines to operate to/ from such airports. The details of various Modernization/ Upgradation works being undertaken in Tamil Nadu is at Annexure. However, the completion of any project depends upon a number of various factors such as land acquisition, availability of mandatory clearances, financial closure by the airport developer etc. (c) & (d) : The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issues guidelines to ensure compliance of the COVID-19 appropriate behavior at the airports. The same are being strictly followed at all the airports. Various measures like contactless payment and thermal screening have been made available at Airports. The facility for e-passport processing has also been provided at Chennai Airport.
