Question : Law and Order Situation

(a) whether law and order situation in the country including in West Bengal and Karnataka is deteriorating;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the total number of incidents of crime that came to light during the previous year and the current year along with the details of the action taken by the Government against the guilty persons, State-wise including West Bengal;

(c) whether the Government has sought any report from the State Government of West Bengal on the cases of brutal murders that took place recently in the State;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the comprehensive measures taken by the Government to improve the law and order situation in the country?

(a) to (e): The law and order situation in the country is generally under control. ‘Public Order’ and ‘Police’ are State subjects under the seventh Schedule to the Constitution of India. The responsibility of maintaining law

and order and protection of life and property of the citizens rests primarily with the respective State Governments. The State Governments are competent to deal with such matters under the extant provisions of laws.
The data on crime in India is maintained by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The latest data on cases of murder, State-wise, including West Bengal, are enclosed at Annexure.
Government of India continuously monitors the internal security situation in the country, issues appropriate alerts and advisories, shares intelligence inputs, extends manpower and financial support including by deployment of CAPFS, and provides guidance and expertise to the State Governments for maintenance of security, peace and public tranquility.
