Question : VOLUNTARY NATIONAL YOUTH CORPS



(a) whether the Government proposes to create a Voluntary National Youth Corps to take up river cleaning and beautification programme in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof alongwith the details of action plan prepared by the Government for the said purpose;

(c) whether the voluntary national youth corps is likely to start its social work with the cleaning of river Ganga;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the time by which the said corps is likely to be created?

(a)to(e) The Government has introduced a new Scheme “ National Youth Corps (NYC)” which would enable young men and women in the age group of 18-25 to serve up to two years in nation building for which they will be paid honorarium of Rs. 2500/- per month. The volunteers are to be engaged in various development activities which would bring a rapid social transformation. The attachment of the volunteers is to be made for the community service which would also include : (1) Environment and sustainable development (2) Local governance (3) Health, nutrition, fitness and recreation (4) Employable skills and Entrepreneurship development. Under the Scheme 20,000 volunteers are to be enrolled of which 8,000 will be in Jammu & Kashmir and 12,000 volunteers in other States. The scheme is to be rolled out from the Financial Year 2010-2011.
