Question : OPERATION OF ENGINE WITH CNG



(a) whether the Railways have developed and tested a kit for operation of diesel engines on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG);

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the details of the cost variation between CNG and diesel run engines per hundred kilometer; and

(d) the time by which commercial operation of CNG engines is likely to be implemented?

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF RAILWAYS (SHRI MANOJ SINHA)

(a) Yes, Madam.

(b) Dual fuel kits (CNG & Diesel) have been procured and tested on Driving power cars (DPCs) in Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMUs).

(c) In comparison to diesel engine, a saving of 6% has been realised by use of CNG engines in dual fuel mode.

(d) Commercial operation is already implemented on 4 DPCs that have been converted so far.
