Question : Growth of Broadcasting Industry

a) Whether the India’s television industry has registered growth of 12.12 per cent in 2018-19 as compared to 2017-18 as per the findings of Annual Report of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and if so, the details thereof;

b) The number of private FM radio stations and terrestrial radio network of public service broadcaster – All India Radio (AIR) operational at the end of 2019;

c) The number of community radio stations, State/ UT-wise:

d) Whether the subscription revenues rose by 10.69 per cent to Rs 43,500 crore in 2018-19 as compared to Rs. 39,300 crore in 2017-18 and if so, the details thereof;

e) The number of registered Multi System Operators (MSOs), cable operators and DTH operators with his Ministry, State/UT wise and the total number of satellite TV channels permitted by MIB at the end of 2019;and
f) the other steps being taken by the Ministry for the strengthening of broadcasting system in India?

a) As per the FICCI- Ernst &Young(EY) report titled “A billion screens of opportunity- India’s Media & Entertainment Sector”(March 2019) India’s television industry grew by 12.12 per cent from Rs. 66,000 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 74,000 crore in 2018-19.
b) At present, 382 private FM Radio channels are operational in 107 cities, spread across 27 states and 3 UTs in the country. Prasar Bharati is having 653 AIR transmitters operating from 482 stations across the country at the end of 2019.
c) As on 31st January 2020, there are 278 operational Community Radio Stations in the country. A list of State/ UT wise CRS is enclosed at Annexure- I.
d) As per the FICCI- E&Y report (2019), subscription revenues from the Television industry rose by 10.69% from Rs. 39,300 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 43,500 crore in 2018-19.
e) As on 31st January 2020, there are 1630 Multi System Operators (MSOs) registered with Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. State/UT wise number of MSO is enclosed at Annexure-2. However, Local Cable Operators (LCOs) are not currently registered with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. There are 5 DTH operators in the country. A list of DTH operators is enclosed at Annexure-3. As on 31st January 2020, the total number of private satellite channels permitted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting stands at 918.
f) The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting continues to create an enabling environment for strengthening of broadcasting system through continuous review of policies and programmes and taking steps to improve ease of doing business.
