Question : Guided-Missile Stealth Frigates

(a) whether the Goa Shipyard Limited’s (GSL) collaboration with Russia’s United Ship Building to build two guided-missile stealth frigates for the Indian Navy has recently been approved by the Government;

(b) if so, the details and the salient features thereof and the extent to which this will boost the defence preparedness of the country;

(c) whether some of the Indian companies have shown their displeasure for this collaboration;

(d) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor; and

(e) whether the cost and other details has been discussed with the Russian authorities in this regard and if so, the details and the present status of the project?

(a) GSL has been nominated to build two ships with Transfer of Technology (ToT) from Russia.

(b) The ships, fitted with a state-of-the art indigenous weapon / sensor package, with advanced stealth features and a high degree of automation will contribute to our defence preparedness and provide a definitive edge over our potential adversaries.

(c) & (d): No, Madam.

(e) Cost and other details with regard to construction of two ships at GSL will be discussed in due course.
