Question : HIV and AIDS Cases

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) the recorded number of the HIV and AIDS cases in the country as on December, 2019; and

(b) the number of deaths caused due to HIV and AIDS from the year 1998 to 2019, year/State/UT-wise?

(a): As on 31st December 2019, there are 17,77,437 cases of alive HIV infected people registered with National AIDS Control Programme (NACP), Government of India.
(b): Infection with HIV virus causes progressive deterioration of immune system leading to immunodeficiency syndrome and making the HIV infected people susceptible to many opportunistic infections like Tuberculosis, Pneumonia and HIV-associated malignancies such as Kaposi sarcoma. In cases of death of people living with HIV/AIDS
(PLHIV), the same cannot be directly attributed to AIDS and is mostly caused by opportunistic infections. Data related to death among PLHIV who were on Anti-retroviral treatment is available with NACP from 2006-07. As per this data, from 2006-07 till December 2019, the total number of such deaths reported is 4,78,695. The State/UT-wise details by year is Annexed.
