Question : Urea Bags

Will the Minister of CHEMICALS AND FERTILIZERS be pleased to state:

(a) Whether the Ministry has decided to have urea bags of 45 kgs. In place of 50 kgs.;

(b) If so, the reasons for reducing the quantity along with the likely savings in usage of urea as a result thereof;

(c) The normal quantity of urea used for one acre of land;

(d) Whether the Ministry is coordinating with Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to bring awareness among the farmers regarding the required quantity of urea to be used; and

(e) If so, the details thereof ?

(a) & (b): Yes, Madam. In order to leverage on the benefits of NCU and for promotion of balanced use of fertilisation, it was decided to introduce 45 kg bag of Urea in place of 50 kg bag of Urea.
(c) to (e): The rate of application of fertilizers nutrient including nitrogen is soil and crop specific. The Government of India is promoting the soil test based Balanced & Integrated use of fertilizer in conjunction with Bio-fertilizers and Organic fertilizers. Under the Soil Health Card Scheme; Soil card provides not only the soil fertility status but also the dose of fertilizer required for a particular crop based on soil test results. Further, under the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA), Department of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmers Welfare (DAC&FW), there is a provision for training farmers and demonstration on judicious use of fertilizers. Widespread awareness campaign through print and visual media has also been done by DAC&FW.
