Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS (SHRI T.R. BAALU)

(a), (b) & (c) At present the Sangli Zoo in Maharashtra has fifteen lions only. Fifteen lions have been transferred to other zoos and rescue centres. Twelve lions and two spotted deer are reported to have died between 1998 and 2000. Death of 2 peacocks and a leopard pertains to the year 1992. Sangli zoo did not have appropriate housing space and health care facilities. As such, the zoo was not accorded recognition by Central Zoo Authority. In response, zoo authorities have taken population control measures, improved housing and health care facilities for animals along with appointment of a regular veterinarian for the zoo. Serpent Park in the zoo was closed.
