Question : Pure Drinking Water for All

(a) the details of the target achieved so far to provide safe and clean drinking water to every citizen of the country as on date, State-wise;
(b) whether water conservation awareness programmes are organised; and
(c) if so, the details of the programmes organised in Jammu & Kashmir and Bihar, district-wise?

(a) To enable every rural household to have potable tap water supply in adequate quantity, of prescribed quality and on regular and long-term basis by 2024, Government of India, in partnership with States, is implementing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal.
At the time of announcement of Jal Jeevan Mission on 15th August, 2019, out of 18.93 Crore rural households, 3.23 Crore households (17%) were reported to have tap water connections. As of date, out of 18.98 Crore rural households across the country, 7.76 Crore households (40.89%) are reported to have potable tap water supply in their homes. The State/ UT-wise details of rural households having tap water connection is annexed.
(b) & (c) In 2019-20, Government of India had launched Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA), a water conservation campaign, which was implemented in two phases in 1,592 blocks of 256 water-stressed districts,including 1 in Jammu & Kashmir and 12 in Bihar. During the campaign, officers, groundwater experts and scientists from the Government of India have worked with State and District officials, Panchayati Raj institutions, civil society, local community, in these districts to promote water conservation activities. Presently, country-wide ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan – Catch the rain’ is underway for water conservation including Bihar and Jammu & Kashmir.
