Question : Silchar National Highway Project

Will the Minister of DEVELOPMENT OF NORTH EASTERN REGION be pleased to state:
(a) the salient features of the Saurashtra – Silchar National Highway Project;
(b) the details of the targets set therein and the funds sanctioned, allocated and utilized under this project so far;
(c) whether the Government has taken note that the work has not been completed for the people of Barak Valley in South part of Assam although twenty-four
years have already been passed since the inauguration of this project,
(d) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor; and
(e) the steps taken/being taken by the Government in this regard?

Answer given by the minister


(a) and (b) Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on 18th December, 2003 approved NHDP Phase-II i.e. North-South and East-West (NS-EW) corridors. The total length of North-South and East-West (NS-EW) corridors connecting Srinagar to Kanyakumari and Porbandar to Silchar is 7,142 km, out of which about 6,768 km length has been completed.
(c) to (e) The work on Nrimbanglo to Harangajao section of the NH-27 (Barak Valley region) remains to be completed, as the older contracts were foreclosed due to inherent geo technical/ geological difficulties such as frequent landslide, frequent hill movements, and slip failures. Now, the balance works on the section has been re-awarded after carrying out fresh detailed project study incorporating several geo-technical mitigation measures for ensuring the stability of road.
