Question : Separate Toilets for Boys and Girls

(a) whether the Government has started “Swachha Bharat Swachha Vidyalaya” campaign to provide separate toilets for girls and boys in all the schools;

(b) if so, the details thereof along with the number of schools in the districts of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra where such toilets have been constructed;

(c) whether the toilets have not been constructed in several schools in some States even today due to which the students are facing difficulties and if so, the details thereof, State-wise particularly in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra?

(a) Yes, Sir. In response to the announcement made by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 15 August, 2014, the Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education) had launched Swachh Vidyalaya initiative (SVI) to provide separate toilets for girls and boys in all Government schools, within one year. Under the initiative, the gaps in availability of toilets was addressed and construction/re-construction of 4,17,796 toilets, including 1.91 lakh girls’ toilets, were completed in 2,61,400 Government elementary and secondary schools as reported by the States and UTs.

(b) District-wise number of toilets constructed/ re-constructed in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra under SVI are at Annexure-I.

(c) As per Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE+), 2018-19 (provisional), details of State/UT-wise percentage of Government schools in the country, including Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, with boys’ toilets and girls’ toilets are at Annexure-II.
