Question : NEW IIMS



(a) the norms/ criteria laid down for establishment of Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs);

(b) the present student-teacher ratio in IIMs in the country, institute-wise;

(c) the measures taken/proposed to be taken by the Government to improve the said ratio;

(d) whether the Government proposes to set up more IIMs in addition to the seven IIMs already announced; and

(e) if so, the details thereof, State-wise and the time by which such proposals are likely to be finalized?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (e) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 304 FOR 01.12.2010 ASKED BY SHRI N. CHALUVARAYA SWAMY, M.P. AND DR. SANJAY JAISWAL, M.P. REGARDING “NEW IIMS.”

(a): Historically, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have been established on the basis of the perceived need for technical and management education. However with the ushering of the economic reforms other factors like demand for trained manpower, availability of various types and sizes of business to serve as laboratory, availability of adequate resources and presence of environment favorable to the growth, felt needs for expansion of facilities for high-quality management studies were taken into consideration for setting up new IIMs. While doing so, regional balance and existence of other national level institutions were also kept in mind.

(b): As per the approved norms of Government of India, the student-teacher ratio in IIMs is 10:1.

(c): There is no proposal under consideration of Government to change the existing student-teacher ratio in IIMs.

(d) & (e): No proposal beyond the seven new IIMs already approved, is under consideration in the Eleventh Five Year Plan Period.
