Question : COAL BED METHANE IN BOKARO



(a) the present position of the project launched for tapping coal bed methane in Parvatpur of Bokaro district;

(b) whether all the works are being completed for this project within time frame;

(c) if not, the reasons therefor;

(d) the time by which this project is likely to be completed;

(e) whether any action plan has been formulated for utilisation of coal bed methane; and

(f) if so, the details thereof?

(a) Government has awarded a Coal Bed Methane (CBM) block in Jharia coalfield in Bokaro district of Jharkhand including the Parvatpur sector, to the consortium of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC) and Coal India Ltd. (CIL), for Exploration and Production of CBM and the Contract has been signed on the 6th February, 2003. ONGC had earlier taken up the Research & Development (R&D) activities in the Parvatpur sector.

(b)&(d):- As per the terms of the CBM Policy, the Work Programme has been divided into four phases as follows:-

The Contractor has a walkout option at the end of phase-I & II under the CBM Contract. The work can be started by the above consortium as per the work programme after the issue of Petroleum Exploration License (PEL) by the Government of Jharkhand.

(e) &(f):- As per the CBM policy, the Contractor has the freedom to market CBM produced from his block.
