Question : PURCHASE OF AWACS ON LEASE FROM RUSSIA

(a) whether the Government have decided to purchase three AWACS from Russia on lease as reported in the Nav Bharat Times dated April 16, 2000 or have made any agreement otherwise for purchase of the same;

(b) if so, the details of terms and conditions laid down therefor; and

(c) the main features of these AWACS and the extent to which it is likely to enhance our Air Force level?

(a) There is no decision to purchase three Russian AWACS. However, one Russian AWACS aircraft has been taken on lease for 30 days for in-country demonstrations to provide hands-on experience to IAF personnel.
