Question : ACCOMMODATION TO VISITORS OF COMMONWEALTH GAMES



(a) the number of domestic and foreign visitors separately expected during the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, 2010;

(b) whether adequate arrangements have been/are being made to provide accommodation to these visitors;

(c) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor; and

(d) the alternative arrangements planned by the Government in this regard?

(a) to (d): The Commonwealth Games during 2006 in Melbourne had attracted 90,000 visitors and it is expected that around one Lakh visitors would come to Delhi for Commonwealth Games-2010.

The Ministry of Tourism has assessed that approximately 40,000 rooms would be required in the National Capital Region of Delhi to meet the demand of the visitors coming for the Commonwealth Games, Delhi-2010. The Ministry of Tourism is coordinating with various lands owning agencies viz. Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Governments of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana for expeditous completion of the ongoing new hotel projects for the Games. Additionally, it is proposed to use ‘Bed & Breakfast’ establishments and DDA housing flats located at Vasant Kunj and Jasola, which would be furnished and operated by India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) for the Games. A ‘Task Force’ has been constituted in the Ministry of Tourism to monitor the position of accommodation for the Games on a regular basis.
