Question : Compilation of Labourers' Data

(a) whether as per the official data, the number of labourers in the country is fifty lakh only while the actual figure touches six crore;
(b) the reaction of the Government thereto;
(c) the details of the basis of compilation of such official data; and
(d) the efforts made by the Government to compile the child labour related data?

(a) to (d): As per results of surveys conducted by NSSO, the number of working children (5-14 years) estimated on usual status basis was 91 lakh during 2004-05, 50 lakh during 2009-10 and 40 lakh during 2011-12 showing a declining trend. The methodology adopted by NSSO in its surveys is based on sound statistical methods and is internationally accepted.
