Question : Shortage of Housing Units

Will the Minister of HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS be pleased to state:
(a) whether it is a fact that the shortage of housing units has come down from 18.76 million to 10 million;
(b) if so, the factors responsible for bringing down the shortage;
(c) whether any private players have created housing units as part of the PPP model under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor; and
(d) the tentative deadline by which all citizens will have residential units and the manner in which such units will be made available to them?

(a) & (b): Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) [PMAY (U)], States/UTs are undertaking demand survey for assessing actual demand of housing. As communicated by all States/UTs, the total urban housing demand received so far under the PMAY (U) is approximately 12 Million which is likely to change after completion of demand validation/assessment by all States/Cities.


(c): Total 74,094 housing units in total 102 projects approved under the PMAY (U) are being undertaken by States in PPP mode.

(d): The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is implementing PMAY (U) to achieve the Government’s vision of “Housing for All” by 2022. The Mission aims to provide financial assistance to all States/UTs in addressing the housing requirements of urban poor including the slum dwellers through following four verticals:
(i) “In-situ” Slum Redevelopment (ISSR);
(ii) Credit-Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS;
(iii) Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP); and
(iv) Beneficiary-led individual house construction or enhancement (BLC).
