(a) Pradhan Mantri gram SadakYojana (PMGSY) is a one-time special intervention of Government of India to provide rural connectivity, by way of a single all-weather road, to the eligible unconnected habitations in the core network. It was launched in the year 2000 as a measure towards alleviation of poverty in rural areas by providing access to basic services to the rural population by providing them good quality roads. A total of 6,44,633 Km road length has been sanctioned under new connectivity and up gradation components under PMGSY-I, out of which 6,02,886 Km road length has been completed as on 18.03.2021. The eligible habitations there under were identified with a population of 500 or above in the plain areas and 250 or more in the hilly and North Eastern States. Later on in the LWE affected identified blocks the scheme intended to cover habitations of 100 or more as well.
PMGSY-II was launched in May, 2013 and envisages consolidation of the existing Rural Road Network to improve its overall efficiency as a provider of transportation services for people, goods and services. A total of 50,000 km road length has been targeted for upgradation under PMGSY-II, against which 49,925 Km road length has been sanctioned and 41,809 Km road length completed till 18.03.2021.
Road Connectivity Project for Left Wing Extremism Affected Areas (RCPLWEA) was launched in the year 2016 with an aim to improve the road connectivity in 44 worst affected LWE districts and some adjoining districts in 9 States, viz. Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh. The scheme has twin objectives of enabling smooth and seamless anti-LWE operations by the security forces and also ensuring socio-economic development of the area. A total of 9,286 km road length has been sanctioned and 3,118 km road length has been completed till 18.03.2021.
The Government approved PMGSY-III in July, 2019 for consolidation of 1,25,000 Km Through Routes and Major Rural Links connecting habitations, inter-alia to Gramin Agricultural Markets (GrAMs), Higher Secondary Schools and Hospitals. A total of 48,166 km road length has been sanctioned and 7,059 km road length has been completed till 18.03.2021.
PMGSY is an ongoing scheme. Since inception till 18th March, 2021, a total of 7,52,010 km road length has been sanctioned, out of which 6,54,898 km road length has been completed and connectivity to 1,54,670 habitations have been given.PMGSY-I & II works are targeted for completion by March, 2022 while RCPLWEA works are targeted to be completed by March, 2023. For PMGSY-III the completion period is 2025.
