(a) the status of induction of new technology, modernisation and upgradation of major ports in the country;

(b) whether the Government has recently reviewed the performance of major ports, if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether any standards/noms have been fixed to assess the performance of major ports and if so, the details thereof during the last three years, port-wise and year-wise;

(d) the targets set for cargo handling for the current year, port-wise; and

(e) the additional capacity proposed to be added at various ports as a result of the ongoing modernisation/expansion programmes?

(a) Modernisation and upgradation of Major Ports of the country is a ongoing process to keep the port in tune with the new technology and also to meet the trade (traffic) requirements. All the ports prepare a Five Year perspective Plan and also Annual Plans in which various modernisation schemes are incorporated. The Ministry monitors such projects on regular basis.
The Government has undertaken the following measures to modernize the Ports:

(i). Construction of new berths and terminals;
(ii). Various expansion/upgradation projects for berths
(iii). Installation of new and modern cargo handling equipments
(iv). Deepening draught in Ports to handle larger vessels.
(v). Installation of Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) for smooth movement of vessels.
(vi). Implementation of Web-based Port Community system.
(vii). Installation of scanners at all container terminals
(viii). Implementation of 104 initiatives to reduce time and cost of operations in ports and Benchmarked to international standards. 30 have been implemented and the remaining will be implemented over various phases by 2019.
(ix). Green Port initiatives such as creation of Solar Power Projects, e-governance etc.

(b) Reviewing the performance of major ports in the country is a continuous process. Government monitors the performance of major ports regularly. The details are as under:-
