Question : Legislation for Protection of Consumers

(a) whether the Government is keen to enact the long-pending legislation relating to protection of consumers‘ interests as envisioned in the Draft Consumer Protection Bill;
(b) whether with the increasing onslaught of e-commerce platforms on retailing sector taking gullible consumers on a ride, it has become expedient to see through the enactment of Consumer Protection Bill; and
(c) if so, the steps being taken in this direction?

(a) to (c) : Consumer Protection Bill, 2019 was passed in Lok Sabha on 30.07.2019 and in Rajya Sabha on 06.08.2019 and was published in the official gazette on 09.08.2019. The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 has been enacted w.e.f 20.07.2020.

Under the provisions of CP Act, 2019, the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 have also been notified on 23rd July, 2020 for prevention of unfair trade practices in e-commerce.
