Question : BIS MARKING FOR HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES



(a) whether the Government propose to strictly enforce the regulation regarding Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS) markings on common household appliances all over the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof?

(c) if not, the reasons therefor; and

(d) the steps taken by the Government making it mandatory for implementation of the BIS Act in order to ensure quality of products?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS, FOOD AND PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION (SHRI TASLIMUDDIN)

(a) to (c): Keeping in view the safety of consumers, Government of India (Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion) has already brought 15 electrical products under mandatory Certification e.g. electrical immersion water heaters, electric iron, electric stove, electric radiators, switches for domestic and similar purposes, tungsten filament general services lamps, AC Watt-hour meters, PVC insulated cables for working voltages upto and including 1100 V etc.

(d) : Mandatory Certification on products is normally enforced to ensure safety of common consumers keeping in view the aspects such as public health and safety. The final decision to bring any product under Mandatory Certification is taken by the concerned Ministry/Department of the Govt. of India.
