(a) & (b): As per information available in www.goidirectory.gov.in, there are 724 districts in the country. A statement showing details of the districts which do not have medical college, State/UT-wise, is given in Annexure-I. According to the available Rural Health Statistics (RHS) 2018-19, 756 district hospitals are functional in the country. Details of functional district hospitals, States/UTs-wise, are in Annexure-II.
(c) & (d): The Central Government is implementing a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for “establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals”. Till date, three (3) phases of the scheme have been launched and 58 districts in 20 States/UTs under Phase-I, 22 districts in 8 States/UTs under Phase-II, and 57 districts in 11 States/UTs under Phase-III have been identified to establish new medical colleges. The details are in Annexure – III, Annexure -IV and Annexure- V respectively.
Establishment of government medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals under this scheme will increase the availability of health professionals and mitigate the shortage of doctors in the country. It will lead to improvement in tertiary care facilities in underserved areas in a cost effective method by utilizing the existing district hospital/referral hospital.
