Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE (SHRI SBPBK SATYANARAYANA RAO)

(a) The area under Soyabean cultivation in Karnataka for the last three years from 1997-98 to 1999-2000 is as under:

Year	Area (‘000 hectare)
1997-98 68.0 1998-99 54.0 1999-2000 61.0

(b)&(c) Yes, Sir. The productivity of soyabean in Karnataka is lower than other States, mainly due to the fact that this is a recently introduced crop in Karnataka and it would take some time to improve its agronomy to suit to Karnataka agroclimatic condition.

(d)&(e) A Centrally Sponsored Oilseeds Production Programme (OPP) is in implementation in the State for increasing the production and the productivity of oilseeds including soyabean. Under the scheme, financial assistance is being provided for various critical inputs like production and distribution of quality seeds, distribution of seed minikits, sprinkler sets, improved farm implements, gypsum/pyrites, micro- nutrients, rhyzobium culture etc. In addition to this, frontline and general demonstrations are also organised on the farmers fields to disseminate the improved production technologies. However, there is no provision for providing any assistance, under this scheme, for setting up of soyabean processing units.
