Question : Funds for Waste to Energy Plants

(a) whether the Government has allocated any funds to set up waste to energy plants in the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof; and
(c) the quantity of waste converted into energy, State-wise?

(a) & (b) The Ministry has been implementing following schemes:
i.Scheme to Support Promotion of Biomass Based Cogeneration in Sugar Mills and Other industries in the Country;
ii.Programme on Energy from Urban, Industrial, Agricultural Wastes/Residues and Municipal Solid Waste (“Waste to Energy Programme”);
iii.New National Biogas and Organic Manure Programme(NNBOMP);
iv.Biogas based Power Generation (Off-Grid) and Thermal Energy Applications Programme (BPGTP).

The above schemes, which were valid till 31.03.2021, have been continued for the period of FY2021-22 to FY 2025-26 with allocation of Rs 500 crores only for meeting committed liabilities.

(c) As on 28.02.2022, 11 plants with a total cumulative installed capacity of 132.1 MW for power generation from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) have been set up in the country. These plants have capacity of processing approximately 11,000 tons of MSW/day to generate electricity. The details of these plants are at Annexure.
