Question : PHCs in Tamil Nadu

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, which is one of the thickly populated districts of Tamil Nadu and has nearly 30 lakh people but have only 64 PHCs, if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether the Government has any plan to establish more PHCs in Kattumannarkoil Taluk of Cuddalore district; and

(c) if so, the details thereof?

(a): Cuddalore District in State of Tamil Nadu has population of 29,02,078 with 13 Blocks. Following Health Institutions are functioning in the district:
• 64 Primary Health Centres (PHCs).
• 7 Urban PHCs.
• 319 Health Sub Centres.
• 1 Government District Head Quarters Hospitals.
• 8 Taluk Government Head Quarters Hospitals.
• 1 Non Taluk Government Hospital.
• 1 Tuberculosis Hospital.

(b) & (c): “Public Health and Hospitals” being a State subject, the primary responsibility of establishment of Public Healthcare Facilities including Primary Health Centres (PHCs) is that of the State Government. However under National Health Mission (NHM) support is provided to States for strengthening of their health care system including support for establishment/ upgradation of public health facilities.

As per the information received from the State Government of Tamil Nadu, at present there is no proposal to create new PHCs in Cuddalore District.
